Achievers Urges Employers to Close the “Appreciation Gap” Ahead of Employee Appreciation Day

As Employee Appreciation Day approaches on March 6, Achievers, the world’s most widely used recognition and reward platform, is calling on organizations to close the “appreciation gap” revealed in its latest reports. According to Achievers Workforce Institute (AWI) research, just one in four employees feel genuinely appreciated at work, while more than two-thirds say they’d increase their effort by 20% or more if recognition were more frequent.

Recognition Isn’t Just Nice—It’s Strategic

In today’s uncertain labor market, gaps in recognition have tangible consequences. When employees feel valued, they are more engaged, productive, and committed—but when recognition is lacking, trust in leadership and employee retention suffers.

“Appreciation is the strongest multiplier in the employee experience,” said David Bator, Managing Director of AWI. “Recognition isn’t symbolic. It’s strategic. When employees feel seen year-round, they’re more connected, productive, and committed to giving their best.”

Three Employee Groups at Risk

  • Women: Often caught between Employee Appreciation Day and International Women’s Day, working women are half as likely as men to feel appreciated, supported in career growth, or fairly compensated.

  • Gen X: Frequently labeled the “forgotten generation,” Gen Xers receive the least weekly recognition, feel less belonging, and report weaker peer connections.

  • Healthcare Workers: On the frontlines of care, healthcare employees are significantly less likely to feel recognized by managers or have trust in leadership.

Four Recognition Signals Leaders Can’t Ignore

  1. Belonging Builds Engagement: Appreciated employees are 54 times more likely to feel a strong sense of belonging.

  2. Recognition Strengthens Connection: Frequent recognition boosts connection to company values, work meaning, and manager relationships.

  3. Productivity Follows Frequency: Employees recognized weekly are 2.6 times more likely to perform at peak productivity.

  4. Appreciation Reduces Attrition: Employees who feel valued are 2.5 times more likely to stay with their employer.

AWI emphasizes that recognition cannot be a one-off calendar event. Companies seeing measurable gains embed appreciation into everyday leadership habits, empowering managers and peers to acknowledge contributions in real time.

For organizations looking to turn recognition into a competitive advantage, Achievers recommends investing in frequent, meaningful recognition that reinforces company values, strengthens relationships, and drives measurable outcomes.
