A new research report from the Association for Talent Development (ATD) reveals that only 15 percent of organizations consider performance improvement plans effective in driving employee success. The report, titled “Performance Management: Working Together to Achieve Results,” underscores a significant gap between the intent and effectiveness of performance management strategies in the modern workplace.

Limited Effectiveness of PIPs: While 88 percent of organizations use PIPs to address performance issues, only 15 percent report success with them. This highlights a fundamental challenge in the traditional approach to managing underperformance.

Alternative Approaches to Performance Improvement: More than half of organizations (58 percent) are turning to coaching, and 57 percent rely on training as more effective methods for improving employee performance.

Training Managers: A significant 42 percent of organizations provide managers with training on giving feedback, which is a critical component of the performance management process.

Challenges in Participation: Many organizations report that lack of time to effectively engage in the performance management process is a key barrier to its success. Other challenges include the inability to adequately reward high performers and struggles to address performance deficiencies.

Alignment with Organizational Goals: Seventy-one percent of organizations agree that aligning individual goals with broader organizational objectives is essential for effective performance management.
Fresh Perspectives Needed for Performance Management
The ATD report suggests that the current approach to performance management may need rethinking to be more relevant to today’s dynamic work environment. With performance evaluation still being a cornerstone of talent management strategies, companies must consider new, more effective ways to engage employees in the process.
“Good performance management rests on measurable outcomes that derive from employees or team goals and objectives,” the report states, emphasizing the importance of transparency and mutual understanding between managers and employees in goal-setting.

ATD surveyed 201 talent development professionals to uncover key challenges and potential solutions. As organizations seek ways to improve their performance evaluation and management processes, the report calls for greater innovation in the ways companies engage with and evaluate employees.
