Bloomforce Releases 2025 EHR Workforce Trends Report

Bloomforce, a specialized healthcare IT staffing and recruiting firm, has released its second annual EHR Workforce Trends Report, offering an in-depth analysis of the current state of the healthcare IT labor market. Based on a nationwide survey of 300 full-time professionals working with electronic health records, the 2025 report identifies critical developments in job satisfaction, compensation, workplace flexibility, and technology adoption.

As a boutique talent partner to healthcare organizations across the U.S., Bloomforce uses this annual report to help providers and employers make informed decisions amid evolving workforce dynamics. The data offers strategic insights into how career expectations are shifting and how employers can remain competitive in attracting and retaining top EHR talent.

Findings from the 2025 Report

● Remote Work Expectations Are Shifting
While 64% of EHR professionals remain fully remote, this marks a decline from 70% in 2024. More notably, 90% of respondents said they would consider new opportunities or negotiate for hybrid flexibility if required to return to the office full time. This underscores the ongoing importance of flexible work arrangements in recruitment and retention strategies.

● Mergers and Acquisitions Drive Workforce Transitions
More than one-third of survey participants reported working at organizations involved in M&A activity within the past three years. When asked what made these transitions either successful or challenging, internal communication ranked as the most critical factor.

● AI Talent Demand Is on the Rise
Seventy-four percent of healthcare IT leaders surveyed either currently employ or plan to hire AI/ML-focused roles in 2025. The growth of artificial intelligence in healthcare IT is not only shaping strategy but also transforming hiring pipelines and skill requirements.

● Career Growth Remains a Pain Point
Seventy percent of non-manager respondents indicated they lack a clear path to promotion. These professionals are 2.5 times more likely to actively pursue new roles, pointing to a need for employers to offer more transparent career development pathways.

“These findings align closely with the conversations we had at ViVE and HIMSS this year,” said Zach Alpern, Managing Director at Bloomforce. “AI is clearly dominating the healthcare IT conversation, but equally important is how organizations support their workforce through change. This report helps our clients stay ahead by using real-time data to inform their hiring and retention strategies.”

The survey was conducted online between November 2024 and January 2025, targeting a diverse range of healthcare provider employees in roles such as application analysts, clinical informatics specialists, project managers, trainers, and people managers.

The full report equips hiring leaders, HR professionals, and CIOs with actionable insights to build adaptive, AI-ready, and employee-centered teams in 2025 and beyond.
