CWI Labs Survey Highlights Challenges Faced by Older Workers

CWI Labs, an organization dedicated to finding innovative solutions to labor force obstacles, has released the results of its Age Inclusion in the Workplace survey. The findings highlight the eagerness of older workers to contribute to an intergenerational workforce, yet they express significant concerns about ageism, microaggressions, and misconceptions that hinder their employment prospects.

The Economic Impact of Age Bias

Gary A. Officer, founder and president of CWI Labs, emphasized the critical role older workers play in the U.S. labor force. “This survey highlights the age-related bias older workers and job seekers face that is costing our economy trillions of dollars each year,” he stated. He noted that while an age-inclusive workforce is an economic imperative, the U.S. lags behind other G-7 countries in the percentage of GDP spent on worker training. To address this, Officer advocates for collaborative efforts between policymakers and businesses to create opportunities for older workers in a rapidly changing job market.

Key Findings from the Survey

  1. Obstacles in the Workplace and Job Market
    • Ageism: The survey found that 81% of older workers believe employers favor younger applicants. Among those over 50 actively seeking jobs, 59% feel their age has been a barrier, with 46% searching for employment for over a year. Only 21% feel optimistic about finding a job in the next six months.
    • Relationships: Older workers reported being 11% less likely to have positive relationships with colleagues across generations, with 83% aged 50+ expressing positive sentiments compared to 94% of those aged 18-49.
    • Microaggressions: Age-related microaggressions are prevalent, with 28% of older workers witnessing such behavior, and 19% experiencing it firsthand, predominantly from younger colleagues.
  2. Dispelling Myths About Digital Skills
    • Willingness to Learn: A remarkable 92% of workers over 50 expressed a desire to acquire new professional skills, including digital skills.
    • Intergenerational Collaboration: Among older workers currently employed, 78% work in teams with colleagues from different generations, and 74% are comfortable being managed by younger individuals.

Ann Manby, Chief Workforce Development Officer at CWI Labs, noted, “These results help to dispel the common misconception that older workers do not want to learn new skills, especially technology-related skills.” She affirmed the organization’s commitment to addressing age-related inequities by enhancing digital literacy among older job seekers.

Third Annual Equity Summit to Address Workforce Aspirations

The findings from the survey will be further discussed at the third annual Equity Summit, organized by CWI Labs and the Center for Workforce Inclusion at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The event will gather over 1,000 employers, policymakers, practitioners, and older workers to explore ways to advance the workforce aspirations of older individuals. This year’s summit features discussions led by leaders from the U.S. Department of Labor and representatives from major employers and workforce organizations.

The Age Inclusion in the Workplace survey underscores the importance of fostering an inclusive environment for older workers, addressing biases, and dispelling myths about their capabilities. By promoting intergenerational collaboration and enhancing opportunities for skill development, the workforce can benefit from the rich experience and knowledge that older workers bring.
