Employee Recognition Cuts Workplace Injuries by 50% in France

The 2025 Global Culture Report by O.C. Tanner presents compelling evidence: frequent employee recognition can reduce workplace injuries in France by up to 50%. Drawing insights from over 38,000 workers across 27 countries — including 1,208 participants from France — the report links the act of appreciating employees with improved mental health and fewer workplace accidents.

Findings from the Report

1. Recognition as a Protective Factor

  • Employees who feel unappreciated are more likely to experience:

    • Poor mental health

    • Decreased concentration and cognitive function

    • Impaired decision-making

    • Higher rates of workplace accidents

  • A formal recognition programme can reverse this trend significantly.

2. Burnout and Workplace Accidents

  • Among workers suffering from burnout:

    • Those without a recognition programme are far more prone to accidents.

    • Those with such programmes are 50% less likely to report workplace injuries.

3. Depression and Injury Likelihood

  • Workers with probable depression:

    • 11% chance of workplace accidents without a recognition programme.

    • 8% chance when a recognition programme is in place.

Why Mental Health Matters in Workplace Safety

Robert Ordever, European MD at O.C. Tanner, highlights a strong link between mental wellbeing and workplace safety:

“There’s a clear link between deteriorating mental health and greater instances of workplace injuries. Mental illness leads to reduced concentration and impaired decision-making. When employees feel unappreciated, their mental state worsens, compounding the risks.”

Recognition: More Than Just a Program

1. It’s About Culture, Not Just Tools

  • Recognition must be:

    • Sincere and individualised

    • Encouraged daily by leaders and peers

    • Integrated into company values and communication

2. Key Organisational Benefits

  • Reduced anxiety, burnout, and depression

  • Fewer workplace accidents

  • Increased employee morale and retention

  • Improved productivity and overall safety

Ordever adds:

“The true impact comes when recognition is frequent, tailored, and meaningful. Organisations that prioritise appreciation see real, measurable improvements in both wellbeing and safety.”

The 2025 Global Culture Report underscores a clear message: recognition isn’t just good for morale — it’s a workplace safety tool. By embedding genuine appreciation into daily workplace culture, organisations in France and beyond can reduce mental health-related risks and create safer, more engaged teams.
