Frequent, Strategic Recognition Boosts Employee Alignment and Engagement, Workhuman Study Finds

Workhuman®, a global leader in employee recognition, has released its Global Research Study: Recognition as an Engine for Strategy, revealing that frequent, high-quality recognition directly linked to strategic initiatives improves employee alignment, engagement, and psychological safety.

“When work is recognized and tied to company priorities, it turns strategy into actionable behaviors,” said Tom Libretto, President of Workhuman. “It helps employees see their role in the bigger plan and gives leaders real-time visibility into who is driving strategic initiatives forward.”

Key Findings

  • Employees with a recognition program are 17% more likely to understand company values and 23% more likely to feel aligned with strategic initiatives.

  • Recently recognized employees were 67% more likely to understand values and 2.5x more likely to feel aligned.

  • Recognition tied to strategic initiatives increased employees’ understanding of those initiatives by 72% and alignment by 122%.

  • When recognition is consistently linked to company strategy, 93% of employees fully understand those initiatives, compared with 62% for those rarely recognized for goal-related work.

  • High-quality programs amplify results: employees who love their recognition program are 7x more likely to feel invested in strategic goals.

Psychological Safety Amplifies Strategic Impact

Recognition also fosters psychological safety, which in turn drives alignment and engagement:

  • Being thanked in the past month corresponds to a 21% higher psychological safety score, and expressing gratitude boosts it by 15%.

  • Teams with high psychological safety show 40% greater understanding of company values, 78% higher alignment to values, 44% greater understanding of strategic goals, and 79% stronger alignment to those goals.

“Meaningful recognition clarifies expectations and builds an environment where people are energized to contribute and feel safe to learn, innovate, and take risks,” said Meisha‑Ann Martin, Ph.D., VP of People Analytics at Workhuman.

Why It Matters

As organizations face complex strategic objectives, recognition is no longer just a morale tool—it is a critical lever for driving business outcomes. Companies that integrate recognition into goal-setting, performance tracking, and culture initiatives can improve engagement, alignment, and execution, while enhancing employee retention and innovation.
