In a move that could reshape the entry point to AI fluency for hundreds of thousands, Goodwill Industries International (GII) and Google.org have teamed up to offer free foundational AI training to 200,000 people across the U.S. and Canada.
The partnership, powered by Google.org’s AI Opportunity Fund, brings the Google AI Essentials course to communities via Goodwill’s expansive network—ensuring accessible, workforce-ready AI education at scale. The course will be offered at no cost and is open to the public, including Goodwill employees and participants in its nonprofit career support programs.
This isn’t Goodwill’s first time bringing tech training to underserved communities. Since 2017, the nonprofit has worked with Google to provide digital skills training, leading to over 400,000 people landing good-paying jobs. Now, the focus is shifting to AI—a technology already reshaping everything from hiring pipelines to task automation.
A Bootcamp for the AI-Curious
Google’s AI Essentials course aims to bridge the gap between everyday workers and emerging tech. Clocking in at under 10 hours, the course offers practical, hands-on experience using generative AI tools to increase productivity, automate repetitive work, and optimize everyday tasks. Think of it as an “AI bootcamp” for the non-technical workforce.
Through videos, readings, and interactive exercises, participants learn how to use AI tools to generate content, summarize documents, manage workflows, and boost overall job performance—skills increasingly in demand across industries. Upon completion, participants receive a Google-backed certificate to share with potential employers.
And there’s real evidence that it works: Google reports that 86% of course grads say it boosted their productivity, and over 80% believe it improved their job performance.
Leveling the Playing Field
The most powerful part of this effort may be accessibility. With 80% of Americans living within 10 miles of a Goodwill, the organization is uniquely positioned to deliver AI training at scale—and meet learners where they are. By embedding the course into its Goodwill Digital Career Accelerator® (GDCA) initiative, the nonprofit continues its mission of democratizing access to career-advancing technology.
“AI is transforming the workplace,” said Steve Preston, CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “Thanks to support from Google.org, we’re ensuring individuals can gain the essential knowledge needed to thrive in this digital era.”
Google’s Hector Mujica, Head of Americas Philanthropy, echoed the impact: “This collaboration empowers more people to advance their economic mobility and prepare for the jobs of today and tomorrow.”
Context: AI Skills as a Job Market Currency
This initiative lands at a pivotal moment. As AI continues to redefine the workplace, basic AI literacy is rapidly becoming a core employability skill—akin to Excel in the early 2000s. From HR to marketing to customer service, AI tools are now embedded in day-to-day operations.
But access to that knowledge hasn’t been equitable. While enterprise teams train employees on AI workflows, many entry-level or displaced workers are left behind. Goodwill’s community-based approach—combined with Google’s technology—could help close that gap.
By providing free, resume-enhancing training in generative AI, this program isn’t just about tech—it’s about economic mobility, employability, and digital inclusion.
