DEWALT’s Gen Z Skilled Trades Survey Highlights Commitment and Barriers to Success

Ahead of National Apprenticeship Week (November 17–23, 2024), DEWALT, a Stanley Black & Decker brand, released its Gen Z in the Skilled Trades survey. The study explores the motivations, challenges, and aspirations of Gen Z students pursuing skilled trade careers, highlighting their commitment and optimism despite barriers to training and workplace expectations.

Key Insights from the Survey

Gen Z’s Early Commitment and Optimism

  • Early Exposure: 80% of students were introduced to trade careers by age 15, with 25% learning about opportunities as early as 13.
  • Positive Outlook:
    • 77% feel optimistic about their career choice.
    • 84% believe they will be hired immediately after graduation.
    • 67% have already engaged with potential employers interested in hiring them.
  • Supportive Environment: 80% of students report positive perceptions of trades careers from their parents, and 71% from friends.

Barriers to Career Development

Despite their optimism, Gen Z faces significant obstacles, including:

  • Limited Training Access:
    • 52% of students were placed on a waitlist for skilled trades programs.
    • Access to equipment and tools (33%) is also a challenge.
  • Cost Concerns: 43% of students cite the cost of trade school as a barrier.
  • Generational Workplace Value Gaps:
    • Gen Z prioritizes work-life balance (85%) and caring leadership (79%).
    • If these expectations aren’t met, one in three students say they would leave the industry.

Addressing Challenges Through DEWALT’s Initiatives

Supporting Skilled Trades Education

DEWALT’s $30 million Grow The Trades initiative directly addresses these barriers by:

  1. Funding Education:
    • Scholarships for pre-apprentices and students pursuing trades education.
    • Grants for organizations expanding technical education programs.
  2. Networking and Hands-On Learning:
    • Internships, mentorships, and work experience opportunities, already accessed by over 50% of respondents.
  3. National Apprenticeship Week Activities:
    • Hosting over 150 pre-apprentices at DEWALT’s Towson, Md., headquarters.
    • Offering industry panels, tool demonstrations, and tours of cutting-edge R&D facilities.

A Call to Action for Industry Leaders

“Skilled trades jobs are essential to the U.S. economy,” said Maria Ford, President of Commercial & Industrial at DEWALT. “To meet rising demand, the industry must embrace Gen Z’s passion and address their needs to ensure they remain lifelong tradespeople.”

DEWALT’s survey and initiatives underscore the potential of Gen Z to transform the skilled trades industry. However, success hinges on removing barriers, aligning workplace values, and fostering opportunities for growth.
