ResumeTemplates.com, the leading platform for free professional resume templates and examples, has released a recent survey indicating that 6 in 10 full-time U.S. workers plan to seek new job opportunities in 2025. This shift reflects changing priorities and heightened concerns regarding compensation, work-life balance, and job security. Conducted in October 2024, the survey collected insights from 1,258 full-time workers about their career intentions for the upcoming year.
Key Findings
The survey reveals that 56% of respondents intend to pursue new job opportunities, with 27% already actively searching. Notably, 1 in 3 workers indicated they would consider leaving their current roles even without another offer in hand. Confidence remains high among job seekers, with 80% expressing optimism about finding a better position.
Industry Changes
Among the respondents, 21% are contemplating a change in industries, particularly interested in sectors such as healthcare, finance, and technology. Workers in retail, government, and service roles are the most likely to consider this shift.
Major Drivers of Turnover
Low pay, feelings of unappreciation, and burnout are significant factors driving turnover. 40% of respondents cited compensation as a major reason for seeking new roles. Additional reasons include limited career growth, poor management, and lack of flexibility.
Julia Toothacre, Chief Career Strategist at ResumeTemplates.com, commented, “With inflation and minimal cost-of-living increases, it’s not surprising that many people feel undercompensated. Companies often prioritize profits over employee well-being. However, underappreciation can often be traced back to manager relationships. A supportive manager can mitigate feelings of underappreciation, even in cases of low compensation. Transparency and open communication about organizational realities are crucial.”
Priorities for Job Seekers
Work-life balance stands out as a top priority for job seekers, with 99% considering it essential in their next role. Close behind are job security (98%), interest in the work (97%), and higher salary (95%). Additional factors such as flexible hours and opportunities for career growth are also vital considerations for workers.
Concerns About the Future
Furthermore, 30% of job seekers expressed concerns regarding the impact of AI on hiring practices. Additionally, 35% believe the 2024 presidential election may influence their job prospects. Among those who feel the election will affect their search, 57% believe their prospects would improve under a Donald Trump presidency, while 43% feel that Kamala Harris would positively impact opportunities.
The findings from ResumeTemplates.com’s survey highlight significant shifts in the job market as workers reevaluate their career priorities. With a strong focus on compensation, work-life balance, and management relationships, organizations must adapt to retain talent and foster a positive work environment in 2025.
