Supporting Employees Tops the List of Why People Love Working in HR

Human Resources professionals play a crucial role in shaping workplace culture, hiring talent, and ensuring business success. But what do they love most about their jobs?

According to new research from Ciphr, the number one reason HR professionals enjoy their work is supporting employees—with half (50%) of HR decision-makers citing it as their favorite aspect.

Other key motivators include hiring and growing the business (47%), improving workplace productivity (40%), and working with great colleagues (39%).

Top Reasons Why HR Professionals Love Their Jobs

Ciphr’s survey of 300 HR decision-makers highlights the top 10 reasons HR professionals enjoy their roles:

  1. Supporting employees – 50%

  2. Hiring new employees and growing the business – 47%

  3. Improving workplace productivity and efficiency – 40%

  4. Working with great colleagues – 39%

  5. Supporting good employment practices and legal compliance – 37%

  6. Solving problems – 36%

  7. Job satisfaction and a sense of achievement – 35%

  8. Creating a positive and inclusive work culture – 34%

  9. Maintaining a good work-life balance – 33%

  10. Contributing to business success – 32%

A Profession Rooted in Purpose

HR professionals are deeply motivated by the impact they have on employees and businesses. 90% of survey respondents could name at least three aspects of their job that they love, with many identifying six or more.

Ciphr’s findings indicate that HR is more than policies and compliance—it’s about creating workplaces where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.

Job Satisfaction vs. Pay

While HR professionals find their work rewarding, compensation is a mixed factor. Only 28% of respondents listed competitive pay as one of the reasons they enjoy working in HR, ranking it 16th on the list. This suggests that while HR professionals love their jobs, they may feel underpaid compared to their contributions.

HR Leaders Share Their Perspectives

Claire Williams, Chief People and Operations Officer, Ciphr

“HR isn’t just about policies and processes. It’s about unlocking human potential to drive lasting business success, and that’s why I love it.”

Williams emphasizes HR’s role in shaping company culture, developing leadership, and aligning talent strategies with business goals.

Karen Lough, Director of People, Ciphr

“Knowing that what I do can help someone feel more capable, inspired, or supported in their role is what drives me every day.”

Lough highlights the impact of HR in coaching, learning, and development (L&D)—helping employees grow their careers and build confidence.

The research reinforces that HR professionals find their greatest satisfaction in helping employees thrive, improving workplaces, and driving business success.

While salary may not be a primary motivator, the ability to shape workplace culture and positively impact employees makes HR an incredibly fulfilling career.
