1. How does leadership in background screening and HR tech differ from other industries, and what unique challenges does it present?
While other industries may have a stronger focus on revenue generation and margins, leaders in the background screening industry must prioritize compliance, accuracy, and risk mitigation above all else. Our industry also requires a balanced approach that can address the needs of data privacy, ethical considerations, and the rapidly evolving landscape of technology.
2. How can strong leadership in operations improve the candidate experience during the hiring process?
Strong leadership in background screening can significantly enhance the candidate experience by ensuring a transparent, efficient, and respectful process throughout the screening process. This results in minimal effort or additional burden from both the candidates or our customers who are ordering our products and services.
3. What are the biggest operational hurdles companies face in ensuring compliance and accuracy in background screening?
The most impactful hurdles are represented by the data accessibility paradox across the U.S. and other countries when it comes to criminal record availability. While necessary, various security controls, governance policies, and regulatory requirements to protect sensitive data can inadvertently create barriers to records access for entities like HireRight, which are acquiring this information to conduct crucial screenings for organizations. The need to balance security with accessibility can be a challenge. Each entity can be unique in how it stores and enables the information for public inspection, and HireRight vigorously pursues compliance with the laws and regulations that govern our business and rules set forth by each entity that we pull information from.
4. How can companies balance speed and accuracy in background screening to improve talent acquisition outcomes?
Customers consistently cite speed and accuracy as two of their most important factors when it comes to background checks. We prioritize these components by ensuring we have advanced systems and procedures in place to get results as efficiently as possible. Even with these protocols in place, there are still oftentimes issues out of background screeners’ control that will slow results, such as delays at the state or county level in local court jurisdictions, postponements at the lab for drug testing specimens, etc. In these situations, accuracy must trump all factors and cannot be compromised when providing services for talent acquisition. We prioritize continuous communication through our customer service teams, account managers, and on our platform to help ensure customers and candidates alike understand where we are at in the process for every check.
5. What impact does a more data-driven approach to background screening have on hiring decisions?
A more data-driven approach can improve hiring decisions by helping to lessen bias. However, the background screener’s focus must always be on accuracy to support this model.
6. How is the background screening industry evolving with the rise of AI and automation?
The background screening industry is evolving just as quickly as other data-centered businesses and in a very positive direction. Background screeners may now be able to use the application of AI and other automation features to their advantage to create more efficient, accurate, and faster outcomes for their products. AI and automation are also helping the industry become more efficient by enabling customers to subscribe to more comprehensive solutions that can help make their workplace safer.
Another benefit of incorporating these technological advances is the ways in which we are seeing faster turn-around time on background checks. This means that customers can onboard talent faster which improves productivity and has a downstream impact on reducing overall unemployment rates.
