Even as artificial intelligence permeates business operations, workers remain wary of AI managing their paychecks. According to the 2025 “Getting Paid In America” survey by PayrollOrg (PAYO), 34% of U.S. workers are uncomfortable with AI calculating their wages, and 45% are uneasy with AI handling payroll questions.
Survey Insights
The nationwide survey collected responses from more than 25,900 participants, including 22,464 responses specifically on AI and pay calculations. Key findings:
-
7,588 respondents (34%) expressed discomfort with AI determining their wages.
-
10,108 respondents (45%) were uncomfortable with AI tools addressing payroll inquiries instead of a human representative.
The data signals a clear challenge for employers: while AI promises efficiency and scalability, employee trust remains rooted in human oversight.
The Human Factor
“Payroll isn’t just a transaction; it’s a reflection of how much an organization values its people,” said Teresa Smith, Director of Human Insights at UKG. She emphasized that even minimal delays or errors can create financial strain, making accuracy and transparency both operational and strategic imperatives.
Smith added that AI must be people-centered and carefully integrated, with clear communication about how it’s used. “Every paycheck sends a message: ‘You matter.’ To lead, organizations must make that message loud and clear,” she said.
Implications for Employers
Organizations exploring AI-driven payroll solutions may need to adopt a hybrid approach, pairing automation with human oversight to preserve trust. Transparency in AI processes, proactive communication, and easy access to human support could be key differentiators in employee experience and engagement.
The survey was conducted as part of National Payroll Week 2025, held September 1–5, highlighting the ongoing importance of payroll as both a functional and strategic part of workforce management.
