Greenville Tech Builds Upstate Talent Pipeline for Industry

Greenville Technical College is expanding its role as a workforce-development hub for South Carolina’s Upstate, connecting students with employers in advanced manufacturing, health care, aviation, technology and skilled trades. Its model combines technical education with apprenticeships, internships, clinical placements and customized employer training—an approach that increasingly treats colleges as part of the talent-acquisition infrastructure rather than simply a source of credentials.

The competition for skilled workers is pushing employers and educators toward a closer relationship, and Greenville Technical College is making that connection a central part of its workforce strategy.

Based in Greenville, South Carolina, Greenville Tech works with employers across the Upstate to prepare students for careers in health care, advanced manufacturing, aviation, information technology and skilled trades. Its approach combines academic programs with workforce certificates, continuing education, customized training and hands-on industry experience.

The college reports a 94% graduate placement rate, defined as graduates who are employed in their field or continuing their education. While that figure is supplied by Greenville Tech rather than independently audited, it illustrates the institution’s emphasis on connecting education with measurable post-graduation outcomes.

The strategy is particularly relevant in the Upstate, where manufacturing and advanced technology are significant components of the regional economy. Regional workforce planning documents identify advanced manufacturing and automotive as major demand areas, with employers including BMW, Michelin, GE Power, Bosch and Lockheed Martin seeking workers in production, CNC machining, welding, engineering, maintenance and quality control.

That environment is changing the role community and technical colleges play in recruiting.

Rather than waiting until students graduate and enter the job market, Greenville Tech works with companies through apprenticeships, clinical placements, internships and other experiential-learning programs. That makes internships more than an educational add-on. For companies struggling to find candidates with specialized skills, they can become an early-career recruiting channel.

Greenville Tech graduate Carver Blassingame’s experience illustrates the model. Through the BMW Scholars Program, Blassingame worked at BMW while completing his studies at Greenville Tech. He subsequently moved into a full-time role and is continuing his education with a bachelor’s degree in Advanced Manufacturing Technology.

The arrangement also demonstrates the growing importance of learn-and-work models in technical careers. Students can accumulate classroom knowledge and employer-specific experience at the same time, while companies have more visibility into an individual’s capabilities before making a permanent hiring decision.

The approach is especially relevant as manufacturers introduce automation, robotics, artificial intelligence and other digital technologies into production environments.

Greenville Tech recently opened its Center for Welding and Automation Excellence (CWAE), expanding its capacity in welding, automation, robotics and advanced manufacturing. The facility is also intended to provide continuing education for incumbent workers, giving existing employees a way to update their technical skills as manufacturing processes evolve.

Greenville Tech describes the facility as the largest and most advanced welding facility in the Southeast and says it includes the country’s only AI-powered welding lab. Those are institutional claims and are not independently verified in the supplied announcement.

The broader direction, however, is consistent with the needs identified in regional workforce planning. The Upstate’s manufacturing base includes automotive, aerospace, advanced materials, electronics and other technology-intensive industries, creating demand for workers who can operate increasingly automated production systems. Regional workforce documents estimate that manufacturing employed more than 126,000 people in the Link Upstate region as of 2024.

This is where the HR technology story becomes more interesting.

Workforce development increasingly depends on translating employer demand into specific skills, then connecting those skills to education and hiring pathways. That is closely related to the skills-based hiring movement taking place across enterprise HR technology.

HR teams are increasingly using skills taxonomies, talent marketplaces, learning platforms and workforce analytics to identify capability gaps. Technical colleges can provide the education and experiential learning needed to close some of those gaps, while employers provide real-world environments in which those skills can be developed and evaluated.

The model could also help address a persistent problem in early-career hiring: the experience paradox. Employers want candidates with practical experience, while students need their first opportunity to acquire that experience.

Structured internships and apprenticeships reduce that gap.

For Greenville’s employers, the payoff is potentially broader than filling immediate vacancies. Local training partnerships can help companies develop workers around the technologies and processes they actually use, rather than relying exclusively on external candidates whose skills may not precisely match the job.

For students, the benefit is a clearer connection between education and economic mobility.

That connection is becoming increasingly important as automation changes the composition of jobs rather than simply eliminating them. Workers in welding, manufacturing, aviation and health care increasingly need to combine occupational expertise with digital skills, data literacy and the ability to work alongside increasingly sophisticated technology.

Greenville Tech’s workforce model represents one response to that shift: move employers closer to education, bring workplace technology into classrooms and create pathways that allow students to gain experience before graduation.

The result is less a traditional college-to-career pipeline than a shared talent-development system in which employers, educators and students have a stake in developing the skills the regional economy will need next.
