FICO Expands HBCU AI Training With Cybersecurity Challenge

FICO is bringing its Educational Analytics Challenge back for a fourth year, giving students at four Historically Black Colleges and Universities hands-on experience building machine learning systems for cybersecurity. The program reflects a broader shift in workforce development toward practical AI skills, industry mentorship and applied projects that can demonstrate job readiness beyond a traditional degree.

The gap between learning data science in a classroom and applying it in a professional environment is becoming increasingly important as employers compete for AI and cybersecurity talent.

FICO is addressing that gap through its FICO Educational Analytics Challenge, a four-year program that gives students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) direct experience designing, training and evaluating artificial intelligence models.

For the Fall 2026 program, students from Alabama A&M University, Dillard University, Morehouse College and Fayetteville State University will work on a cybersecurity-focused challenge: developing machine learning systems capable of identifying network intrusions before they cause damage.

The initiative is led by FICO Chief Analytics Officer Dr. Scott Zoldi and FICO data scientists, who provide weekly instruction and mentorship throughout the semester. Students will examine threats including denial-of-service attacks, botnets, ransomware and crypto mining before applying their models to real-world cybersecurity scenarios.

The program illustrates how employer-led workforce development is changing as AI becomes embedded in technical roles.

Rather than treating data science as a collection of theoretical concepts, FICO is putting students into a problem-solving environment that resembles the work performed by professional analytics teams.

FICO is partnering with the HBCU Data Science Consortium (DSC), a collaboration involving academic, industry and government leaders focused on addressing data-related workforce challenges. The partnership enables FICO data scientists to mentor students while also supporting the development of analytics curricula at institutions without formal data science programs.

That makes the initiative broader than a student competition.

It creates a feedback loop between employers and universities: companies expose students and faculty to real-world technical problems, while universities gain insight into the skills and curriculum employers increasingly need.

For HR leaders, this model aligns with the broader movement toward skills-based hiring.

Skills-based hiring shifts some emphasis away from whether a candidate possesses a particular credential and toward what the candidate can demonstrate.
