Wingspan, an AI-native platform for flexible-workforce onboarding, payments, billing and compliance, has launched Wingspan MCP in beta, allowing finance and operations teams to interact with workforce and payment data through AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT. The connection lets teams investigate onboarding issues, review payment information and prepare payables while keeping final approval and payment execution inside Wingspan.
AI assistants are moving beyond question answering as enterprise software vendors begin connecting them directly to operational systems. Wingspan’s new MCP integration applies that model to one of the more process-heavy areas of HR operations: managing and paying contractors and other contingent workers.
Wingspan MCP gives a customer’s own AI assistant access to information held within Wingspan, including worker records, onboarding requirements, billing, payments and compliance data. Finance and operations teams can then use natural-language prompts to retrieve information and prepare routine work.
The beta is focused on practical workflows rather than fully autonomous payments. Teams can ask about onboarding progress, identify outstanding requirements, invite workers, review amounts owed, examine payment history, create draft payables and preview upcoming payroll runs.
That distinction is important for HR and finance technology adoption. The AI assistant can help retrieve information and prepare actions, but the final approval and execution of payments remain in Wingspan.
For a finance team preparing a payment run, for example, an assistant could help determine which workers are ready for payment, identify outstanding onboarding issues and summarize previous transactions. Rather than manually exporting records and reconciling information across systems, the team can query the underlying Wingspan data through its AI interface.
Operations teams can use a similar workflow for worker onboarding. Questions about who has completed onboarding and which requirements remain outstanding can be answered from the worker records connected to Wingspan.
The technology is built around Model Context Protocol (MCP), an emerging approach for connecting AI assistants with external applications and data sources. In an enterprise setting, MCP can provide a structured bridge between conversational AI and business systems without requiring employees to switch constantly between separate interfaces.
For HR and finance leaders, however, the more important issue is what happens after an AI system retrieves information. Workforce payments involve sensitive worker, financial and compliance data, making authorization, auditability and human oversight important considerations.
Wingspan’s approach keeps the transaction boundary inside its own platform. AI can assist with discovery and preparation, while users retain control over approval and payment execution.
The initial customer base is companies managing 1099 contractors, international contractors and contingent W-2 employees. That makes the integration particularly relevant to organizations operating distributed or mixed workforces where worker onboarding, invoicing, payments and compliance can span multiple processes.
It also reflects a broader shift in HR technology toward AI interfaces layered over existing systems of record. Instead of replacing the underlying workforce platform, conversational AI can provide another way for employees to access operational data and initiate work.
The challenge will be ensuring that these interfaces remain reliable as workflows become more complex. Payroll and contractor payments require accurate records, appropriate permissions and clear accountability. For enterprise buyers, the ability to keep approval controls in place may be as important as the convenience of asking an AI assistant to prepare work.
Wingspan MCP is now launching in beta for Claude and ChatGPT, giving finance and operations teams an early example of how MCP-based AI access can be applied to contingent workforce management.
Market Landscape
HR technology vendors are increasingly experimenting with AI agents and conversational interfaces that sit on top of systems containing employee, workforce and financial data.
For contingent workforce platforms, the opportunity is particularly significant because onboarding, compliance, billing and payments generate large amounts of structured operational information. MCP-style integrations can make that information accessible through AI while leaving the underlying system of record intact.
The enterprise adoption question is increasingly shifting from whether AI can retrieve information to whether it can do so with the right permissions, context and controls. Keeping final payment execution within the core platform is one approach to maintaining that boundary.
