AbbVie has launched ELAHERE® (mirvetuximab soravtansine) in Singapore, expanding treatment options for women living with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer—a patient population that has historically faced limited therapeutic choices and poor survival outcomes.
The antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) is now available as a monotherapy for adult patients with folate receptor alpha (FRα)-positive, platinum-resistant high-grade serous epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer who have received one to three prior systemic treatment regimens.
The launch marks another step in the growing adoption of precision oncology across Asia-Pacific, where biomarker-driven therapies are increasingly reshaping cancer treatment by matching targeted medicines to patients most likely to benefit.
A Targeted Approach for an Aggressive Cancer
Platinum-resistant ovarian cancer remains one of the most challenging forms of gynaecological cancer to treat.
While surgery and platinum-based chemotherapy remain the standard first-line treatment for advanced ovarian cancer, many patients eventually experience disease recurrence. Clinical data suggest that nearly 70% of women relapse following initial therapy, with repeated treatment often leading to resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy. Once resistance develops, treatment options narrow significantly, and outcomes generally worsen.
ELAHERE is designed to address this unmet need by targeting folate receptor alpha (FRα), a protein that is highly expressed in approximately one-third of ovarian cancer patients.
Unlike conventional chemotherapy, the antibody-drug conjugate delivers a cancer-killing payload directly to FRα-positive tumour cells while aiming to minimise damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The targeted mechanism represents a broader shift in oncology toward more personalised therapies that improve efficacy while reducing unnecessary toxicity.
According to Associate Professor David Tan, Senior Consultant in the Department of Haematology-Oncology at the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS), the availability of targeted therapies is particularly important for patients who have exhausted standard treatment options.
He noted that patients with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer have historically had limited choices and poor prognoses, making therapies capable of improving survival outcomes a significant advancement for eligible patients.
Biomarker Testing Becomes Increasingly Important
The launch also underscores the growing importance of biomarker testing in modern cancer care.
ELAHERE is only indicated for patients whose tumours express the FRα biomarker, making diagnostic testing a critical step before treatment begins.
Clinicians may determine FRα status either at diagnosis or when patients first develop resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy, depending on individual clinical circumstances.
To support patient identification, AbbVie has collaborated with Roche Diagnostics on the VENTANA® FOLR1 (FOLR1-2.1) RxDx Assay, an immunohistochemistry (IHC) companion diagnostic designed to identify patients who may benefit from ELAHERE.
The partnership reflects a broader trend in precision medicine, where companion diagnostics are becoming increasingly integrated with targeted therapies, ensuring treatments are prescribed to the patients most likely to respond.
Addressing a Significant Healthcare Challenge in Singapore
Ovarian cancer remains one of the deadliest cancers affecting women worldwide, largely because it is often diagnosed at an advanced stage after symptoms become apparent.
In Singapore, the disease continues to pose a significant public health challenge.
According to national cancer statistics, ovarian cancer ranks as the sixth most common cancer among women and the sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country. Incidence has gradually increased over the past two decades, while five-year relative survival remains substantially lower than for several other common female cancers, including breast, uterine and cervical cancers.
For patients whose disease becomes resistant to platinum-based chemotherapy, the outlook becomes even more difficult.
Beyond the clinical burden, many patients face significant emotional and psychological challenges as repeated treatments, disease recurrence and treatment-related side effects affect both quality of life and long-term wellbeing.
AbbVie Expands Its Precision Oncology Portfolio
AbbVie says the Singapore launch reflects its broader strategy of advancing targeted therapies for difficult-to-treat cancers.
The company believes antibody-drug conjugates represent an important area of innovation in oncology, combining the precision of targeted biologics with the cancer-killing power of chemotherapy.
Rama V, ASEAN General Manager at AbbVie, said ovarian cancer continues to have a profound impact on patients and their families, particularly when the disease returns after initial treatment.
He noted that ELAHERE provides a clinically meaningful treatment option for women facing platinum-resistant disease, offering renewed hope during an especially challenging stage of their treatment journey.
Kenneth Sim, ASEAN Medical Director at AbbVie, added that the company remains committed to developing innovative targeted therapies that improve outcomes across every stage of ovarian cancer, particularly for patient groups with significant unmet medical needs.
Why the Launch Matters
The approval of ELAHERE highlights the accelerating shift toward precision medicine, where therapies are increasingly selected based on tumour biology rather than cancer type alone.
Across oncology, pharmaceutical companies are investing heavily in biomarker-guided treatments and antibody-drug conjugates as they seek to improve outcomes for cancers that have historically been difficult to treat.
For healthcare providers, the growing availability of companion diagnostics means biomarker testing is becoming an increasingly routine part of clinical decision-making. For patients, it creates opportunities to access treatments tailored to the molecular characteristics of their disease rather than relying solely on traditional chemotherapy.
While ELAHERE is intended only for patients with FRα-positive platinum-resistant ovarian cancer who meet specific treatment criteria, its availability expands Singapore’s precision oncology landscape and offers a new option for a patient population with historically limited alternatives.
As personalised medicine continues to evolve, targeted therapies such as ELAHERE are expected to play an increasingly important role in improving outcomes for women diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer.
