AbsenceSoft has introduced MyAbsence, an AI-guided chat and leave-planning experience designed to help employees identify the appropriate type of leave, understand potential eligibility, and prepare a request before submitting it to HR. Powered by AbsenceSoftAI and the company’s ACE compliance engine, the tool combines conversational intake with a visual leave plan that reflects relevant employment information and applicable company, state, and federal policies. The product is initially available to select customers, with broader availability planned for early 2027.
AbsenceSoft Uses AI to Guide Employees Through Leave Requests
Applying for workplace leave can involve more than selecting dates on a form. Employees may need to understand which policy applies, whether they qualify, how much time could be available, and whether their absence will be paid. When those questions are unresolved at the start, HR teams can end up correcting incomplete or misdirected requests while managing deadlines and compliance requirements.
AbsenceSoft is targeting that early-stage problem with MyAbsence, a new employee-facing experience that combines AI-guided chat with a visual leave planner. The leave and accommodations software provider says the tool is designed to help employees move from an initial question to a more complete leave request without having to navigate the process alone.
The experience has two main parts. First, a conversational interface powered by AbsenceSoftAI asks employees questions about their circumstances and helps identify the reason for leave. It then gathers information intended to determine which state, federal, and employer policies may be relevant. Rather than presenting every employee with the same intake form, AbsenceSoft says the chat adapts its questions using information such as work location and employment tenure already held in the employee record.
The second component is a visual leave planner built on AbsenceSoft’s ACE engine. It previews how a potential leave period could be structured and indicates whether time off may be paid or unpaid. Employees can download the plan or send it to their leave team for review, connecting the planning stage with the formal request process.
The distinction is important: MyAbsence is positioned as a way to help employees understand and prepare a request, not as a replacement for HR review or a system that independently grants leave.
The Compliance Engine Is Central to the Product
A key part of the offering is AbsenceSoft’s Compliance Engine, or ACE. The company says the rules-based system draws on more than a decade of compliance data and tracks more than 200 federal and state leave and accommodations laws. It combines those rules with employer policies and employee information to generate a more relevant preview of potential leave options.
That compliance layer is important because leave eligibility is not determined by a single national rule. Federal protections, state-specific programs, employer benefits, work location, tenure, and the reason for an absence can all affect what may apply. A personalized intake process could help collect the right information earlier and reduce avoidable back-and-forth.
The need is reflected in AbsenceSoft’s own research. Its 2026 State of Leave and Accommodations report surveyed 1,200 HR professionals; 31% identified calculating eligibility for leave entitlements as a major challenge. A separate employee experience report, based on a survey of 2,000 employees, found that 39% of employees who had taken leave described the process as unclear or confusing. These are company-sponsored survey findings, rather than independently measured industry-wide rates.
The regulatory context also explains why an AI-guided intake tool cannot replace formal HR decisions. Under the U.S. Family and Medical Leave Act, employers generally must notify employees of their eligibility within five business days after a leave request or learning that leave may qualify, absent extenuating circumstances. Employers must also provide required rights-and-responsibilities and designation notices as the process advances.
MyAbsence can help employees prepare and help HR teams receive more complete information, but employers still need to verify eligibility, apply the relevant rules, issue required notices, and review individual cases. The distinction is especially important when requests involve overlapping federal and state protections, accommodations, or sensitive medical information.
Human Review Remains Part of the Workflow
AbsenceSoft points to the Center for Human Development as an early customer. The organization’s HR director said the guided chat offered answer choices aligned with employees’ situations, while staff reported spending less time correcting cases. The customer also highlighted the visual leave plan as a way to make complicated leave arrangements easier to understand.
Those comments offer an early indication of how the product may fit into an HR team’s workflow, but they are customer testimonials rather than independently measured evidence of reduced processing time or improved compliance outcomes.
MyAbsence is currently available to select AbsenceSoft customers, with broader availability planned for early 2027, according to the announcement. The company has not disclosed pricing, adoption figures, or quantified results from the initial deployments.
The product’s longer-term value will depend on the accuracy and explainability of its eligibility guidance, how frequently its legal rules are updated, and how effectively it handles unusual or overlapping leave situations. Employers will also need to evaluate privacy safeguards when conversational tools collect information related to health, family circumstances, or workplace accommodations.
AbsenceSoft is addressing a meaningful friction point in leave administration: the gap between an employee recognizing a need for time away and understanding how to formally request it. By combining conversational intake with a rules-based planning engine, the company is attempting to make that first step clearer while giving HR teams better-structured information to review. Whether that translates into fewer errors and faster case handling will become clearer as the product moves beyond its initial customer group.
Market Landscape
Leave and accommodations management is a specialized segment of HR technology, sitting alongside core HR systems, benefits administration, and workforce management. Its complexity comes from the interaction of federal protections, state-level leave programs, employer policies, employee eligibility, and accommodations requirements.
Providers such as AbsenceSoft compete in a market where employers need more than digital forms and case tracking. They need systems that help manage eligibility, documentation, deadlines, employee communications, and compliance workflows.
The introduction of MyAbsence reflects a shift toward employee-facing guidance within these platforms. Instead of treating self-service as a digital version of a paper request form, vendors are adding conversational interfaces and personalized planning tools to help employees understand their options before opening a case.
The competitive differentiator will be the quality of the underlying compliance logic and the ability to keep it current. AI can make the intake process more accessible, but incorrect guidance about eligibility or paid leave could create additional work and legal exposure. Human review, transparent decision workflows, and reliable updates to legal rules remain essential.
