AIHA Updates Free Workplace Health eBook to Tackle Airborne Disease Risks

With flu, RSV, and other airborne illnesses returning as workplace disruptors this season, the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) has launched a second edition of its “Healthier Workplaces and Schools” eBook. The updated version aims to give employers and facilities managers easier access to practical, science-backed tools for protecting workers and communities from infectious disease.

What’s New in Edition Two

Building on the success of the 2024 edition, the new release has been streamlined for usability, making it faster for organizations to identify health risks and apply targeted measures. The guide includes:

  • A risk assessment quiz to measure the likelihood of airborne virus transmission in specific workplace settings.

  • Practical steps to mitigate risks across industries—from healthcare to transit to manufacturing.

  • Guidance written by experts in industrial hygiene and occupational health and safety.

Currently available in English for free download on AIHA’s Commit to C.A.R.E. website, a Spanish-language version is slated for October 2025.

Why It Matters

AIHA CEO Lawrence Sloan says the update addresses more than just COVID-19: “Airborne infectious diseases continue to jeopardize worker health and productivity. These are not limited to COVID and include the seasonal flu, RSV, and even the common cold.”

That’s a pressing issue for employers. According to the CDC, seasonal flu alone costs businesses billions each year in lost productivity. With worker well-being increasingly tied to retention and employer brand, proactive health measures are no longer optional—they’re strategic.

Beyond the eBook

The launch is part of AIHA’s larger Commit to C.A.R.E. initiative, which provides free resources including training videos, worksheets, infographics, and tip sheets. The program has been supported by grants from the CDC and developed in collaboration with the Integrated Bioscience and Built Environment Consortium (IBEC).

By packaging health protocols in a practical, accessible format, AIHA hopes to give employers a roadmap not only for the current flu season but also for future public health threats.
