Homebase Introduces AI Payroll Assistant to Simplify Small Business Payroll

Homebase, the all-in-one platform for payroll, team management, and hiring, has unveiled Payroll Assistant, an AI-powered tool designed to take the headaches out of payroll prep for small businesses. The tool automatically detects and fixes timecard issues—like missed breaks, late punches, or missing clock-outs—before they become payroll errors.

Since 2022, Homebase has processed more than 7 million paychecks totaling $5 billion in gross payroll, and the Payroll Assistant adds to the company’s growing suite of AI tools aimed at saving small business owners hours each week.

How Payroll Assistant Helps Small Businesses

  • Error Prevention: Detects and prompts fixes for missed punches or clock-outs before payroll runs.

  • Clean Summaries: Provides managers with easy-to-review, consolidated timecard reports.

  • Labor Optimization: Offers real-time insights into costs, payroll errors, and compliance risks, helping owners take targeted action.

  • Time Savings: Beta customers are already saving nearly two additional hours per month, adding up to roughly 80 hours per year when combined with Homebase Payroll’s existing scheduling and time-tracking efficiencies.

“Payroll has always been a pain point for small businesses,” said John Waldmann, CEO of Homebase. “Our Payroll Assistant flags and resolves issues before they become errors, simplifying the work and building confidence. Our broader goal is to save small businesses 100 million hours this year—time they can reinvest into their teams and communities.”

Homebase users logged 1.2 billion hours worked across 3.5 million employees in the past year. With Payroll Assistant, the company is aiming to further streamline payroll workflows while providing actionable insights to reduce labor costs and compliance risks.

Currently in beta, Payroll Assistant will expand to select Homebase plans in December, promising small businesses a more automated, error-resistant approach to payroll and team management.
