ATD Launches Generative AI Certificate for Learning & Development Professionals

The Association for Talent Development (ATD) is stepping into the AI era with a new certificate program aimed at helping learning and development (L&D) professionals harness the power of generative AI. Partnering with AI expert Josh Cavalier, ATD is introducing the Applying AI in Learning and Development Certificate, a three-day immersive program designed to transform how talent development practitioners design, deliver, and optimize learning experiences.

Cavalier, a seasoned L&D leader with over 30 years in the field, brings deep expertise in AI integration. Participants in the program will get hands-on experience using AI tools to enhance skill development, human performance, and overall learning outcomes. The course also draws from Cavalier’s upcoming ATD Press book, Applying AI in Learning and Development: From Platforms to Performance (November 2025), providing participants with both practical frameworks and strategic insights.

“I will be sharing my L&D AI Ecosystem framework as a practical roadmap for integrating AI into the day-to-day work of TD professionals,” Cavalier said. “I’m excited to partner with ATD’s world-class Education team to help the global community of professionals skill up in this critical area.”

ATD president and CEO Tony Bingham emphasized the timeliness of the initiative: “This is a critical time for professionals in our field to learn how to harness the power of AI. The TD field has an unprecedented opportunity to transform the way people learn and increase the efficiency and performance of their teams and organizations.”

The certificate program will be offered four times in 2025, starting with the inaugural session at ATD Learning Center in Alexandria, Virginia, October 20-22. Each registrant will receive a hard copy of Cavalier’s book to complement the hands-on training. Seats are limited, and early registration is required, with additional sessions planned for 2026.

As generative AI reshapes industries from tech to talent development, ATD’s initiative positions learning professionals to stay ahead of the curve—ensuring they can not only implement AI solutions but do so in ways that meaningfully enhance learning outcomes and organizational performance.
