Natural Grocers Opens Appleton Hiring Drive Ahead of New Store

Retail expansion is creating new competition for frontline talent, and Natural Grocers is taking its hiring campaign directly into the Appleton, Wisconsin community. The organic and natural grocery retailer is recruiting cashiers, department managers and store leaders ahead of a new Appleton location scheduled to open this fall.

Natural Grocers is turning to a local hiring event to build the workforce for its next Wisconsin store, as retailers increasingly compete for employees who can support both day-to-day operations and customer experience.

The family-operated organic and natural grocery retailer will host an in-person recruitment event in Appleton on August 25, 2026, ahead of the planned opening of its new store this fall.

The company is recruiting for several roles, including cashiers, department management and store leadership positions. Candidates will be able to meet Natural Grocers representatives, learn about the company’s operating culture and discuss available positions.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Appleton, 1565 N Casaloma Drive.

Natural Grocers says Appleton good4uSM Crew members can earn between $16 and $20 per hour, depending on position and experience. Assistant store managers can earn up to $62,000 annually.

The hiring campaign offers a window into how physical retailers are approaching workforce expansion at a time when store operations increasingly depend on a combination of frontline service, product expertise and digital systems.

Building a workforce around store expansion

Opening a grocery store involves considerably more than staffing checkout lanes.

Employees must manage inventory, merchandising, customer service, food safety and department-specific operations. Managers also have to coordinate scheduling, training and performance while maintaining consistent customer experiences.

For specialty grocery chains, product knowledge can be particularly important. Natural Grocers’ positioning centers on organic and natural products, meaning employees may need to engage with customers on nutrition, ingredients and product sourcing in ways that differ from conventional supermarket environments.

The company currently employs more than 4,000 Crew members across 174 stores in 22 states, according to its announcement.

The Appleton expansion therefore represents another incremental addition to a retail network that has built its operating model around relatively specialized store teams.

It also illustrates the continuing importance of employer branding in frontline recruitment.

Natural Grocers highlights a set of employee benefits that includes medical, dental and vision coverage for eligible full-time workers, retirement savings, paid time off and nutrition education programs.

One unusual benefit is its Vitamin Bucks program, through which employees receive an additional $1 per hour worked as in-store credit. The company also provides birthday bonus pay equivalent to one day’s wages.

Store discounts and product credits of up to 30% are another component of the employee package.

Retail workforce technology is changing the job

While the Appleton hiring event is a traditional recruitment tactic, the jobs being filled exist within an increasingly technology-enabled retail environment.

Modern grocery stores rely on point-of-sale systems, inventory management platforms, workforce scheduling software, digital ordering infrastructure and data analytics. Managers increasingly need to understand not only people and products but also the systems connecting those functions.

Retailers are also experimenting with artificial intelligence to forecast demand, optimize inventory, personalize promotions and improve workforce scheduling.

For employees, that means retail technology is becoming less visible as a standalone function and more embedded into everyday work.

A store manager may use data-driven systems to determine staffing requirements, monitor sales performance or identify inventory issues. A department employee may interact with digital inventory tools or online order workflows during a normal shift.

The result is a retail workforce that increasingly combines customer-facing skills with technology literacy.

Benefits become part of the talent strategy

Natural Grocers is also emphasizing employee benefits as part of its recruitment strategy.

The company’s benefits package includes health insurance, flexible spending and health savings accounts, short- and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, a 401(k) plan and paid time off for eligible full-time employees.

The company also promotes access to nutrition education programs and discounts on its products.

For retailers, these benefits can be particularly important because hiring competition extends beyond other grocery stores. Frontline employees can move between supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies, warehouses, logistics companies and other service businesses.

That makes compensation only one part of the recruitment equation.

Schedule flexibility, advancement opportunities, healthcare, retirement benefits and workplace culture can all influence whether an employee joins—and stays with—a retailer.

Natural Grocers says its employee approach is rooted in its Five Founding Principles, which have shaped the company’s culture since its founding in 1955.

What the Appleton opening signals

The Appleton hiring campaign is ultimately a localized example of a broader retail challenge: expanding physical operations requires retailers to build reliable talent pipelines at the same time they invest in technology and new stores.

Digital commerce has changed how consumers shop, but physical stores remain central to grocery retail. That makes employees a critical part of the customer experience.

For Natural Grocers, the immediate objective is straightforward: fill the positions required for its Appleton launch.

For the wider retail industry, however, the recruitment strategy points toward a more complex workforce model—one in which store employees combine service, product expertise and increasingly digital workflows.

As grocery retailers expand their footprints, the ability to recruit and retain those workers may prove just as important as selecting the right location.

Market Landscape

Grocery retail is becoming increasingly technology-intensive while remaining highly dependent on frontline labor.

Retailers are investing in AI-powered demand forecasting, automated inventory management, workforce scheduling, self-checkout, digital loyalty programs and omnichannel fulfillment. Yet these technologies have not eliminated the need for employees who manage stores and interact directly with customers.

For specialty retailers such as Natural Grocers, employee expertise can also become part of the brand proposition.

The competition for retail workers is therefore increasingly a combination of wages, benefits, career progression, workplace culture and technology-enabled productivity.

The Appleton recruitment campaign reflects this hybrid model: a traditional in-person hiring event paired with digital job applications and a benefits package designed to support employee retention.
