World Youth Forum Brings 400 Students to Macao for Climate Learning Summit

Climate change is increasingly forcing students to connect science with economics, policy, culture and communication. The World Youth Forum (WYF) has brought that interdisciplinary approach to Macao, where more than 400 students from over 10 countries and regions participated in the 2026 Future Liberal Arts Leadership Summit, examining climate change through academic challenges, creative projects and cross-cultural collaboration.

Climate change rarely fits neatly inside one classroom subject.

Understanding its impact requires knowledge of science and mathematics, but also economics, public policy, literature, culture and communication. That multidisciplinary challenge was at the center of the Future Liberal Arts Leadership Summit (WYF-FLALS) 2026, which concluded in Macao after five days of student-led learning and international exchange.

Organized by the World Youth Forum (WYF) in partnership with the Organizing Committee of the International Academic Decathlon (IAD), the summit brought together more than 400 students from over 10 countries and regions.

Participants came from Cambodia, China—including Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR and Taiwan region—India, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.

The event followed WYF-FELS in Hong Kong, completing the organization’s 2026 summit series. Across the two events, WYF says more than 1,000 young people participated in programs focused on economics, liberal arts and cross-cultural exchange.

The central theme of the Macao summit was “Our Changing Climate.”

Rather than treating climate change solely as a scientific problem, students approached it through social science, literature, fine arts, science, mathematics, economics and music.

That format reflects a broader shift in education toward interdisciplinary learning.

Climate change is a useful case study because its consequences cross traditional academic boundaries. Scientific models can explain rising temperatures, while economics examines the cost of adaptation and mitigation. Literature and the arts can shape how societies understand environmental change, while mathematics provides tools for interpreting data and forecasting outcomes.

For students, working across those disciplines can develop a different set of skills from conventional subject-based learning: research, collaboration, communication, problem-solving and the ability to connect evidence from different fields.

Those capabilities are becoming increasingly relevant to employers and universities as organizations confront complex problems that cannot be solved by one technical specialty.

Moving beyond classroom learning

WYF-FLALS used challenges, projects, speeches and exchanges to place students in situations requiring both academic knowledge and communication.

The program included the Super Quiz, Academic Exploration Fair, Team Spark & Global Fusion Fest, U20–Master Call, U20–Idea Incubation, Themed Speech and U20–Youth Voice, alongside Bridging Worlds: Real-World Learning Journey.

The activities were designed to connect academic concepts with real-world problems while giving participants opportunities to collaborate with peers from different cultural and educational backgrounds.

That cross-cultural component is significant.

International education programs increasingly aim to develop students who can operate across different cultural contexts, particularly as higher education, research and technology become more globally connected.

For participants, working with students from other countries can expose them to different approaches to the same problem. A climate issue viewed primarily through an engineering lens, for example, can look very different when examined through economics, public policy or community development.

The summit also brought students into contact with policymakers, education representatives, business and community leaders.

Among the guests were representatives from Macao’s Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute, Macao Government Tourism Office and Education and Youth Development Bureau, alongside representatives from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR, the All-China Youth Federation and the Chinese Youth Advancement Association.

Amy Dosch, Executive Director of the United States Academic Decathlon, and Henry Peng, a Global Council Member of WYF, were also among the participants and guests.

Their involvement provided an additional bridge between classroom learning and broader institutional perspectives.

Education is becoming more project-based

The model used at WYF-FLALS reflects a growing interest in challenge-based learning, where students are asked to apply knowledge to practical questions rather than simply reproduce information.

That approach has particular relevance as artificial intelligence changes how students access information.

Generative AI tools can increasingly summarize documents, generate explanations and assist with research. As those capabilities become more widespread, education systems face a growing need to emphasize skills that cannot be reduced to information retrieval.

Students need to assess sources, frame questions, collaborate, make judgments and communicate conclusions.

Interdisciplinary projects can provide a practical environment for developing those capabilities.

The climate theme also gives students an opportunity to work with a problem that will influence multiple sectors, from energy and transportation to agriculture, finance and infrastructure.

For technology and workforce leaders, the connection is important. The future workforce will increasingly need both specialized expertise and the ability to work across disciplines.

From academic competition to collaboration

The International Academic Decathlon partnership adds another dimension to the program.

Academic competitions can create incentives for students to develop subject knowledge and problem-solving ability. When combined with collaborative projects and cross-cultural exchange, they can also shift the emphasis from individual performance toward teamwork and communication.

WYF-FLALS recognized achievements across academics, teamwork, communication and creativity.

That combination reflects a broader definition of student success.

A technically correct answer may solve one problem, but complex real-world challenges also require people who can explain their reasoning, work with others and adapt their ideas to different audiences.

WYF says it plans to continue working with IAD, schools, educators and international partners to expand access to interdisciplinary, challenge-based learning.

The organization’s scale provides a foundation for that ambition. WYF says it engages more than 500,000 young people annually across more than 30 countries through education programs, competitions, conferences and youth-led initiatives.

The next challenge will be translating individual events into sustained educational pathways.

Summits can provide exposure, networks and short-term learning experiences. Long-term impact depends on whether students can continue developing those skills through schools, universities, competitions and community projects.

WYF-FLALS 2026 nevertheless illustrates why interdisciplinary education is gaining attention.

The problems students will inherit—from climate change to AI governance and technological disruption—do not respect the boundaries between academic departments.

Preparing young people for those challenges may therefore require education systems to do the same.

Market Landscape

The education technology ecosystem is moving toward more personalized, collaborative and experiential learning models.

Traditional learning management systems remain important, but schools and universities are increasingly combining them with AI tutoring, digital collaboration, project-based learning, simulation, skills assessment and global learning platforms.

The rise of generative AI makes this transition particularly significant. When information can be generated instantly, education providers have greater reason to focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, communication and applied learning.

Programs such as WYF-FLALS occupy a complementary space by taking learning outside conventional classroom structures and exposing students to international peers, competitions and real-world challenges.

The model also aligns with employer demand for multidisciplinary skills. Companies such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon and NVIDIA increasingly operate across software, AI, infrastructure, science and business, creating demand for professionals who can collaborate across technical and nontechnical disciplines.
