authID Brings Biometric Identity Verification to Industrial HR

Industrial companies are facing a workforce identity problem that extends well beyond passwords. Large contractor populations, shared workstations and increasingly connected manufacturing environments create more opportunities for attackers to impersonate legitimate users. authID says a global industrial automation leader has selected its biometric identity platform to secure Microsoft Entra ID and ServiceNow, extending identity verification into service-desk operations and employee and contractor onboarding.

Manufacturing organizations are becoming increasingly dependent on connected equipment, digital workflows and distributed workforces. That connectivity has created another challenge: proving that the person requesting access is actually who they claim to be.

authID, a biometric authentication provider, has been selected by a global industrial automation company to strengthen identity assurance across its ServiceNow service desk and Microsoft Entra ID environment.

The deployment is designed to cover several workforce-related use cases, including employee and contractor onboarding, service-desk identity verification, passwordless authentication and account recovery.

The announcement reflects a broader shift in enterprise security. Identity is increasingly becoming the control point between employees, contractors and the systems they need to access, while traditional credentials remain vulnerable to phishing, credential theft and social engineering.

For HR and IT teams, the issue becomes particularly complicated during onboarding.

Industrial organizations can employ large contractor populations that need access to systems without necessarily receiving the same long-term infrastructure or devices as full-time employees. Verifying those identities before granting access can therefore become both a security and workforce-management requirement.

Moving identity verification into the HR workflow

authID says the manufacturer initially conducted a proof of concept involving ServiceNow password resets, Microsoft Entra ID authentication and biometric enrollment before selecting its Proof identity-verification platform and Verified + PrivacyKey biometric authentication technology.

The products are intended to create a stronger link between an individual’s verified identity and subsequent authentication events.

That distinction is important.

Traditional identity and access management systems primarily determine whether someone possesses the correct credentials or authentication factors. Identity proofing addresses a different question: whether the person being enrolled is genuinely the individual represented by their identity documents or records.

That capability is becoming increasingly relevant to HR technology.

A contractor can pass through recruitment, onboarding and provisioning workflows before receiving access to enterprise systems. If identity verification is weak at the beginning of that process, downstream security controls may be built on an unreliable identity record.

Biometric verification offers one way to strengthen that initial trust relationship.

authID says its platform supports document verification across 16,000 document types and more than 240 countries and territories. The company also says its biometric architecture does not store biometric templates, a privacy approach intended to reduce the consequences of a centralized biometric database compromise.

Those are company-reported capabilities and should be evaluated against an organization’s own privacy, security and regulatory requirements.

Deepfakes are changing the authentication equation

The manufacturer’s decision also highlights an emerging problem for enterprise security teams: identity fraud is becoming more sophisticated.

AI-generated deepfakes and injection attacks can be used to manipulate digital identity verification processes. That creates a challenge for systems that assume a camera feed, document or authentication session is genuine simply because it appears legitimate.

authID says the customer selected its platform partly because of its fraud and deepfake detection capabilities, including certified detection of presentation and injection attacks.

The company also reports a false non-match rate of approximately 0.3% and a false match rate of roughly one in one billion.

Such metrics can be useful when comparing biometric technologies, but enterprise buyers need to consider the conditions under which they were measured. Accuracy can vary depending on devices, lighting, populations, document quality and authentication environments.

Manufacturing brings an unusually large attack surface

The stakes are particularly high in industrial environments.

According to IBM X-Force’s Threat Intelligence Index, manufacturing has been the most targeted industry for the past five years and accounted for more than one-quarter of global cyberattacks, according to the figures cited by authID.

Manufacturing environments also contain a complicated mixture of corporate IT, operational technology, connected machinery, suppliers and third-party personnel.

That makes identity governance more difficult.

An attacker who compromises an employee account may gain access to business systems. A compromised contractor identity can create another pathway into operational environments or sensitive intellectual property.

Connected industrial equipment adds another dimension. Service accounts and machine-to-machine connections can operate continuously, making it important for organizations to establish clear ownership and human accountability around privileged access.

This is where HR and cybersecurity increasingly overlap.

Employee identity information begins in workforce systems, but the resulting identity becomes relevant to identity and access management, endpoint security, privileged access and operational technology.

Passwordless authentication isn’t just about convenience

authID’s deployment also includes passwordless biometric authentication and self-service account recovery.

Passwordless access has traditionally been discussed as a user-experience improvement. Removing passwords can reduce help-desk resets and eliminate one category of credential theft.

But in high-risk industrial environments, the more significant benefit may be identity assurance.

The company says its Verified + PrivacyKey technology can authenticate users without relying on company-issued devices and without storing biometric templates. The manufacturer is also exploring additional use cases, including identity proofing triggered by high-risk signals and authentication for shared workstations.

That could matter for factories and industrial facilities where employees may move between workstations or operate equipment without having an individual corporate laptop.

HRTech and cybersecurity are converging

The deployment illustrates how workforce technology is expanding beyond traditional HR software.

Platforms such as Microsoft Entra ID, ServiceNow, Workday and other enterprise systems increasingly sit at the intersection of employee records, identity, workflow and access management.

For HR leaders, this creates a new responsibility: onboarding is no longer simply about getting a new employee into payroll, benefits and training systems. It can also establish the digital identity through which that individual gains access to critical company resources.

The same applies to contractors.

A strong identity process can help organizations establish who a worker is, what they are permitted to access and when that access should expire.

For industrial companies, that connection between workforce identity and cybersecurity could become increasingly important as manufacturing systems become more connected and attackers increasingly target human credentials.

authID’s deal is therefore less about replacing passwords with biometrics than about establishing a stronger identity root of trust across the employee lifecycle.

That is a direction HR technology vendors and enterprise buyers will need to watch closely as AI-generated fraud makes proving digital identity more difficult.

The convergence of HRTech, identity security and enterprise IT is accelerating.

Traditional HR platforms manage employee records, onboarding and workforce processes. Identity platforms such as Microsoft Entra ID determine access to applications and resources. Service-management platforms such as ServiceNow manage support workflows and account recovery.

Biometric identity verification can connect those layers by strengthening confidence in the person behind a digital identity.

The trend is particularly relevant for organizations with large contractor populations, shared workstations, regulated operations or high-value intellectual property.

Competitive technologies include passwordless authentication, passkeys, hardware security keys, mobile authentication and biometric identity verification. No single approach eliminates every risk, and enterprise teams increasingly need layered identity controls rather than a single authentication mechanism.

For HR leaders, the important consideration is lifecycle governance: identity proofing during recruitment and onboarding, authentication during employment, privilege management throughout the worker lifecycle and rapid deprovisioning when access is no longer required.

As AI makes impersonation and synthetic identities more convincing, that lifecycle is becoming a core enterprise security concern.
