A new Special Report on Leadership in an AI-Driven World, published by NTUC LearningHub, finds that while senior executives increasingly recognize artificial intelligence as a strategic business priority, many remain uncertain about their ability to guide organizations through AI-driven change.

The report, based on a survey of 131 senior leaders across industries including information technology, financial services, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare, highlights a widening gap between AI ambition and leadership preparedness. All respondents reported some level of involvement in AI adoption decisions within their organizations.

The findings reinforce a growing trend across enterprise technology: successful AI transformation depends not only on deploying advanced tools but also on equipping leaders with the skills to manage organizational change, workforce development, and responsible AI governance.

Many Leaders Feel Unprepared for Enterprise AI Transformation

One of the report’s most significant findings is the level of uncertainty among senior executives tasked with leading AI initiatives.

Nearly 46% of respondents say they are prepared only to a small extent to lead organization-wide AI transformation, while 2% report being completely unprepared.

By comparison:

As AI capabilities continue evolving through platforms offered by companies including Microsoft, Google, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Salesforce, and NVIDIA, business leaders face increasing pressure to make informed strategic decisions while navigating a rapidly changing technology landscape.

Confidence in AI Decision-Making Remains Limited

The readiness gap also extends to executive decision-making.

While 43% of leaders describe themselves as quite confident in making high-impact AI decisions and 13% say they are very confident, a significant proportion continue to express uncertainty.

Approximately 40% report being not very confident, while 4% say they are not confident at all.

The findings suggest organizations may need stronger executive education around AI strategy, governance, and implementation to ensure business leaders can make informed decisions regarding technology investments and organizational change.

Leadership Upskilling Is Becoming a Strategic Priority

Despite recognizing the importance of AI leadership, relatively few executives have participated in formal development programs.

Only 34% of respondents report completing leadership training related to AI during the past two years.

Among those who have not yet participated:

  • 22% plan to undertake training within six months.
  • 20% expect to do so within one year.
  • 11% intend to pursue training within two years.

Only 13% have no plans to undertake AI leadership training.

When asked about learning priorities, respondents ranked:

  • AI literacy and strategic understanding (57%)

  • Ethical AI governance and responsible AI deployment (40%)

The most common leadership shift identified in the study is a greater emphasis on people management, cited by 37% of respondents.

Nearly 88% of respondents rate these capabilities as either very important or quite important.
