India’s management education sector is gaining greater visibility in global rankings, with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR) climbing nine places to #26 globally and #2 in India in the Financial Times Masters in Management (FT MiM) 2026 ranking. The institute’s performance also marks its seventh consecutive year among the world’s top 50 business schools.
SPJIMR’s latest ranking places it behind IIM Bangalore among Indian institutions and ahead of IIM Ahmedabad, according to the institute. Five Indian business schools now feature in the global top 50, compared with four in the 2025 ranking.
The result points to a broader shift in management education: business schools are increasingly being evaluated not only on academic reputation, but also on how effectively they translate education into career opportunities, alumni engagement and long-term professional value.
For employers and prospective students, those metrics increasingly matter as organizations place greater emphasis on business skills, digital fluency, leadership capabilities and the ability to adapt to changing workforce requirements.
Careers and Alumni Networks Stand Out
SPJIMR retained its #1 position in India for Careers Service, while improving its global ranking from #3 to #2.
The category evaluates how effectively a business school’s careers service supports recruitment, based on feedback from alumni. The result highlights the growing importance of the connection between management education and employment outcomes.
SPJIMR also ranked #1 in India for Alumni Network, moving from #11 globally in 2025 to #6 in 2026.
Alumni networks have become an increasingly valuable component of business education as graduates look for professional connections, recruitment opportunities, entrepreneurial support and access to industry knowledge beyond the classroom.
For business schools, maintaining those networks can create a long-term feedback loop between graduates, employers and current students.
Value for Money Gains Ground
SPJIMR also retained its #1 position in India for Value for Money, rising from #56 globally to #50.
The FT category incorporates alumni salaries, tuition fees and associated programme costs, providing a more outcome-oriented view of the economics of management education.
That metric is becoming particularly relevant as students and families scrutinize the return on investment of postgraduate education. Tuition costs, employment prospects and career progression increasingly form part of the decision-making process when students compare business schools.
The ranking therefore places career services and alumni outcomes alongside the cost of education rather than treating institutional reputation as the sole indicator of value.
ESG and Net-Zero Education Improves Sharply
One of SPJIMR’s largest improvements came in ESG and Net Zero Teaching.
The institute ranked #1 in India and moved from #63 globally to #28. The category considers the share of teaching devoted to ESG issues and climate solutions, along with alumni assessments of the curriculum.
The improvement reflects how sustainability is becoming more integrated into management education.
For employers, ESG knowledge increasingly intersects with corporate strategy, risk management, supply chains, reporting, investment decisions and regulatory requirements. Business schools are consequently under pressure to prepare graduates for a corporate environment where sustainability is no longer confined to specialist teams.
Participant Experience Remains a Key Differentiator
SPJIMR reported an overall participant satisfaction score of 9.6 out of 10, another indicator of the institute’s emphasis on the student experience.
Dean Varun Nagaraj attributed the ranking gains to improvements across career outcomes, alumni engagement and programme value, while emphasizing continued investment in placement support and learning depth.
The combination of career services, alumni engagement, satisfaction and programme value gives the ranking a workforce-oriented dimension. Business education is increasingly expected to demonstrate how learning translates into employability and career mobility.
Indian Business Schools Expand Their Global Footprint
The FT MiM ranking includes management programmes designed primarily for students with limited work experience. It evaluates schools across factors including alumni career progress, career services, alumni networks, diversity, international experience, research and ESG and net-zero teaching.
Fourteen Indian business schools appear in the 2026 global ranking, compared with 11 in 2025, according to SPJIMR.
The increased representation suggests that India’s management education ecosystem is gaining broader international visibility.
That matters beyond rankings. As Indian companies expand globally and multinational employers deepen their presence in the country, business schools are increasingly operating as part of a larger talent pipeline connecting students with employers across sectors and geographies.
What the Ranking Signals for Business Education
SPJIMR’s performance illustrates how the value proposition of a business school is evolving.
Career support and alumni networks remain critical, but sustainability education, international exposure, participant satisfaction and measurable financial outcomes are becoming equally important.
For students, the shift means evaluating programmes through a broader lens than brand recognition. For employers, it provides additional indicators of how institutions are preparing graduates for modern business environments.
The stronger showing of Indian schools also raises the competitive stakes domestically. As more institutions enter the global top tier, schools will need to differentiate through employer relationships, curriculum relevance, international opportunities and the quality of career outcomes they deliver.
SPJIMR’s climb to #26 is therefore more than a nine-place movement in a global table. It reflects a management education market increasingly focused on what graduates achieve after the classroom experience—and how effectively business schools connect education with the changing needs of employers.
Market Landscape
The management education market is increasingly shaped by:
- Employability and career outcomes: Students and employers are placing greater emphasis on career progression and recruitment support.
- Alumni ecosystems: Business schools are using alumni networks as long-term platforms for recruitment, entrepreneurship and professional knowledge sharing.
