Leadership changes in specialist insurance businesses often signal more than a new title. They can reflect where an insurer sees growth, technical demand and customer needs developing next. Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has promoted Katharina Rütz to Head of Executive & Professional Lines in Germany, putting an experienced commercial insurance specialist in charge of a business spanning directors and officers liability, financial institutions, financial market transactions and multinational insurance programs.
BHSI Strengthens Germany Leadership With Katharina Rütz Promotion
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance is strengthening its Executive & Professional Lines leadership in Germany with the promotion of Katharina Rütz, known as Kathi, to Head of Executive & Professional Lines in the country.
Rütz joined BHSI in 2021 and brings more than 13 years of experience in the German insurance market. Before taking on her new role, she served as Head of Commercial Lines E&P in Germany and previously worked as a Senior Underwriter specializing in Directors & Officers (D&O) insurance.
She will continue to be based in Cologne and will work alongside Dr. Carsten Keune, Head of Executive & Professional Lines for DACH.
For BHSI, the appointment puts an established technical insurance leader closer to the centre of a business covering some of the more complex risks facing companies, financial institutions and corporate executives.
Executive insurance is becoming a more specialised discipline
Executive & Professional Lines insurance covers risks that increasingly intersect with corporate governance, financial markets, regulation and management decision-making.
D&O liability insurance, for example, protects directors and officers against certain claims arising from decisions made in their professional capacities. Financial institutions and transaction-related insurance can involve similarly complex exposures, requiring underwriting teams to understand both the insurance product and the underlying business environment.
That makes technical expertise particularly important.
Andreas Krause, Head of DACH at BHSI, said Rütz had played an important role in growing the company’s Executive & Professional Lines business in Germany, highlighting her leadership, technical expertise and relationships with customers and brokers.
Her promotion therefore represents a continuation of a career path that has already included both underwriting and commercial leadership responsibilities.
From underwriting expertise to business leadership
Rütz’s previous roles at BHSI give her experience across different sides of the E&P business.
As Senior Underwriter for Directors & Officers in Germany, she worked within a specialty that requires close attention to corporate governance, executive decision-making and changing legal and financial risks. Her subsequent position as Head of Commercial Lines E&P expanded that responsibility toward broader business development and client needs.
The move into country-level leadership combines those experiences.
That progression also reflects a wider challenge for specialty insurers: finding leaders who can connect technical underwriting knowledge with broker relationships, customer expectations and commercial strategy.
Unlike more standardised insurance products, specialist commercial coverage can require considerable judgment. Underwriters and executives must assess evolving risks that may not fit neatly into historical models.
Technology is changing the risk environment
The insurance industry is also operating in an environment where technology is changing the nature of corporate risk.
Artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital financial infrastructure, automated decision-making and increasingly complex data environments are creating new questions for companies and their boards.
For Executive & Professional Lines insurers, these developments can influence everything from directors’ responsibilities to financial and operational exposures.
AI is a useful example. As businesses deploy generative AI and automated systems, boards and executives increasingly face questions around governance, oversight, data management and responsible deployment. Insurers therefore need teams capable of understanding not only traditional financial and legal exposures, but also how technology changes corporate risk.
This is where technical insurance talent becomes strategically important.
Germany remains an important specialty insurance market
BHSI’s German E&P operation sits within the company’s wider European and international insurance network.
In Germany, the business offers D&O liability, financial institution coverage, financial market transaction solutions and multinational insurance program capabilities.
These products serve organisations operating across increasingly interconnected markets, where a claim, regulatory development or transaction can have consequences across multiple jurisdictions.
For brokers and corporate buyers, that makes expertise and international coordination important alongside the underlying insurance capacity.
Rütz’s promotion comes against that backdrop, placing a leader with substantial German market experience at the head of the country’s E&P operation while maintaining links with the wider DACH leadership structure.
The talent question behind specialty insurance growth
The appointment also highlights an often-overlooked part of insurance-sector transformation: specialist talent.
Technology can improve underwriting workflows, automate administrative processes and provide insurers with larger quantities of risk data. But complex commercial insurance still depends heavily on human judgment, industry knowledge and relationships.
That has implications for insurance workforce development.
Insurers increasingly need professionals who combine traditional underwriting skills with data literacy, technology awareness, communication capabilities and the ability to interpret unfamiliar risks.
For HR and talent leaders, the challenge is not simply recruiting experienced underwriters. It is creating career paths that allow technical professionals to move into commercial and strategic leadership without losing the expertise that differentiates specialty insurance businesses.
Rütz’s progression—from D&O underwriting to commercial E&P leadership and now country-level responsibility—is an example of that kind of internal talent development.
A leadership change with a broader industry message
BHSI operates as part of Berkshire Hathaway’s insurance group and has built a global specialty insurance network spanning commercial property, casualty, healthcare professional liability, executive and professional lines, transactional liability, marine and other insurance categories.
In Europe, BHSI operates through Berkshire Hathaway European Insurance DAC and Berkshire Hathaway International Insurance Limited.
The company’s decision to elevate Rütz in Germany reflects the value it places on local market expertise within that international structure.
For the German specialty insurance market, the more important story may be what happens next: how E&P insurers respond to rapidly changing corporate risks, how technology reshapes underwriting, and whether the industry can develop the next generation of specialists who understand both insurance fundamentals and emerging technologies.
Rütz’s appointment does not by itself change those market dynamics. But it places an experienced insurance professional in a position to help navigate them.
And in a business where risk is becoming more interconnected and technically demanding, that combination of specialist knowledge, leadership and customer understanding remains difficult to automate.
Market Landscape
The Executive & Professional Lines insurance market is being shaped by increasingly complex corporate, financial and technology risks.
D&O liability remains a major specialty area, while financial institutions, transactional insurance and multinational programs require insurers to understand increasingly interconnected business environments.
Technology is also changing the risk landscape. AI adoption, cyber risk, digital finance, data governance and automated decision-making are creating new exposures for companies and their executives.
For insurers, this increases demand for talent that combines underwriting expertise with technology awareness and analytical skills. Platforms such as AI-powered underwriting systems, insurance analytics and digital broker tools can support decision-making, but complex specialty risks continue to require experienced human judgment.
