Cambridge A Level Results Highlight Rising Demand for Future-Ready Skills

Cambridge International Education has begun releasing results from its June 2026 exam series, with Cambridge International AS & A Level entries rising 5% year over year to nearly 368,000 students across 3,492 schools. Growth was particularly strong in Southeast Asia, where Indonesia and Thailand each recorded a 12% increase, underscoring continued demand for internationally recognized qualifications as students prepare for an increasingly AI-shaped workforce.

The competition for future talent is beginning well before graduates enter the labor market.

Cambridge International Education’s latest exam results offer a snapshot of that shift. The organization said nearly 368,000 students across 3,492 schools worldwide received Cambridge International AS & A Level results from the June 2026 exam series, with entries increasing 5% from a year earlier.

The strongest growth is coming from parts of Southeast Asia.

Cambridge reported a 12% increase in AS & A Level entries in both Indonesia and Thailand, while Cambridge IGCSE entries also grew in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand.

The numbers point to sustained demand for internationally recognized secondary qualifications. But they also highlight a larger workforce trend: students, educators and employers are increasingly focused on skills that remain valuable as artificial intelligence changes the nature of work.

Mathematics remained the most popular Cambridge International AS & A Level subject across Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. Science subjects also appeared among the five most popular subjects, reinforcing demand for STEM education.

Business was among the five most popular A Level subjects in Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand, suggesting that interest in entrepreneurship and business capabilities is growing alongside demand for technical skills.

That combination matters to employers.

The emerging labor market is unlikely to divide neatly between technical and nontechnical workers. AI systems can automate or accelerate portions of many jobs, but organizations still need people who can reason, communicate, make decisions, understand business environments and apply technical knowledge to real-world problems.

Education systems are therefore facing a difficult question: which capabilities should students develop before entering a labor market where the definition of a job can change rapidly?

Cambridge is positioning its A Level curriculum around subject depth and transferable capabilities such as independent thinking.

Rod Smith, Group Managing Director for International Education at Cambridge, said the growth reflects demand for the combination of deep subject knowledge and skills valued by universities and employers.

That combination is becoming increasingly relevant to workforce planning.

For employers, academic credentials remain one signal of potential, but the skills economy is moving toward more granular assessments. Companies are increasingly interested in what candidates can actually do rather than relying exclusively on institution, degree or job title.

This trend is visible across enterprise HR technology.

Platforms from Microsoft, Workday, SAP, Oracle and LinkedIn are increasingly incorporating skills data, learning and talent intelligence into workforce-management strategies. Employers are experimenting with skills-based hiring, internal talent marketplaces and AI-assisted workforce planning to identify capabilities across their organizations.

The education system is part of the same transition.

Qualifications that establish subject knowledge can provide a foundation, while employers increasingly layer skills assessments, certifications, work experience and practical demonstrations on top.

For students pursuing international careers, the ability to navigate different education and employment systems adds another dimension.

Cambridge says its qualifications are increasingly being used to access universities across Asia, Australia, the United Kingdom and other international destinations. According to Cambridge, its learners account for roughly one in eight international students entering UK universities.

That global mobility creates a potential pipeline for employers seeking talent with international experience.

The Southeast Asian growth figures are particularly notable because the region is becoming an increasingly important center for technology, manufacturing, financial services and digital business.

Malaysia recorded more than 74,000 Cambridge exam entries during the June series. Malay as a Foreign Language was the most popular Cambridge IGCSE subject there, illustrating how international qualifications can coexist with local language and education needs.

For employers, multilingual and cross-cultural capabilities can be increasingly valuable as organizations build distributed teams and expand into new markets.

The AI transition makes this more complicated.

Generative AI can already produce text, code, images and analysis, reducing the value of some routine knowledge work while increasing the importance of judgment, verification and domain expertise.

That does not necessarily make traditional academic subjects less relevant. In some cases, it may make foundational knowledge more important.

A worker cannot effectively evaluate an AI-generated financial analysis without understanding financial concepts. A software engineer cannot reliably validate generated code without programming knowledge. A healthcare professional cannot safely rely on AI recommendations without clinical expertise.

The future workforce therefore needs both domain knowledge and the ability to work alongside increasingly capable technology.

This is one reason STEM subjects continue to attract strong demand. Mathematics and science provide foundational capabilities that can be applied across technology, engineering, healthcare, finance and other sectors.

Business education adds another layer, particularly as entrepreneurship and digital commerce create new pathways into employment.

The challenge for employers will be translating these educational signals into meaningful hiring and development strategies.

A Cambridge qualification can demonstrate academic preparation, but it does not provide a complete picture of a candidate’s workplace capabilities. Recruiters and HR teams will still need to evaluate communication, collaboration, technical skills, adaptability and practical experience.

That is where skills-based talent systems could become increasingly important.

Rather than replacing academic credentials, these systems can add a more detailed layer of information about what an individual knows and can do.

Cambridge’s latest results therefore tell two stories at once.

The first is about continued international demand for a familiar academic qualification. The second is about a changing definition of readiness.

As AI reshapes jobs, the strongest candidates may increasingly be those who combine deep knowledge with adaptability, critical thinking and the ability to use new technologies effectively.

For HR leaders, that means the talent pipeline starts much earlier than recruitment.

Education providers, employers and HR technology companies are gradually becoming part of the same skills ecosystem—one that will determine how effectively the next generation moves from classrooms into an increasingly automated workplace.

For international students, globally recognized qualifications may also provide mobility advantages as employers recruit across borders and build distributed workforces.
